Police Report: September 6-10

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

September 10th:

3800 block of 34th Street (Alife Market) (supplement): Theft – 9:30am.Officers investigating the theft that occurred at about midnight last night reviewed the store’s surveillance video of the incident. They were able to positively identify the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest charging him with misdemeanor theft. At about 5pm officers located him in the 3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue and arrested him on the warrant. He was delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville without incident.

4100 block of Rainier Avenue: Attempt burglary – 5:35pm. The resident came home and discovered that the screen and window of her bedroom window were broken and laying on the back deck. The window lock was still intact and holding the window closed. It did not appear as if those responsible were able to get into the house and nothing was reported stolen. The scene was processed with one possible print collected. A neighbor said that he saw two black males in the backyard of another house in the block and believes that they were trying to break into that house as well.  The possible suspects were described as:

1)      Black male; 18-25 years of age; 6’ tall; 150lbs.; wearing a yellow stripe shirt;

2)      Black male; 18-25 years of age; 6’ tall; 155lbs.; wearing a white shirt, black shorts and a fisherman style hat.

September 9th:

3700 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 11:40am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: M/V collision – 12:40pm.  Officers investigating the collision found that a 2011 BMW was traveling east in the traffic circle. A Metro bus entered the circle, crossed into the BMW’s lane and collided with it. There were no injuries and there was minimal damage to both vehicles.

4000 block of 37th Street: Burglary – 6:05pm. The resident told officers that she and her son left home at about 8:30 this morning and must have left the back door to the residence unlocked. When she returned home this evening she discovered that someone had tried to pry her front door open causing significant structural damage to the door. She also discovered that both the back door and screen door were ajar. There was no damage to either door. She victim checked her back yard and found the gate open and her dog missing. She was able to locate the dog in the neighborhood and upon checking the house did not find anything missing.

4000 block of 30th Street: Attempt burglary – 7:55pm. The resident told officers that he left home at about 10 this morning and left all the windows unlocked and the rear windows open to get fresh air in the house. When he came home this evening he discovered a back window open and the window screen pulled off. He inspected the house and found nothing missing. He credited his dog with deterring those responsible from entering the house.

3800 block of 34th Street (Alife Market): Theft – 11:55pm. The store clerk told officers that he bagged several food items for a customer. Once the items were bagged the customer took the bag and left the store without paying.  The suspect was described as a black male, 6” tall, 200 lbs., 23-27 years of age, wearing black shorts and a white shirt. He was last seen walking north on Bunker Hill Road.

September 8th:

2800 block of Shepherd Street: Vehicle impound – 9:20am. Officers impounded a 2004 Acura for displaying tags that expired in June of 2015.

3200 block of Queenstown Drive: Hit and run collision – 2:55pm. The owner of a 2014 Nissan told officers that he came out to his vehicle at about 10:30 this morning and discovered fresh damage to the rear bumper. Damage appeared consistent with the vehicle being struck by a second unknown vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue (St. James Church): Destruction of property – 4pm. The reporting person told officers that sometime between 5pm on September 3rd and 9am on the 4th someone broke the front office window. Damage to the window was slight. There were no signs of entry into the building and nothing was reported missing.

4400 block of 28th Place: Warrant service – 7:25pm. Officers responded for the report of a man sleeping in front of an apartment building. They located and awakened the man. Further investigation revealed that he had an open arrest warrant through the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office for failing to appear in court on a trespassing charge. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3800 block of 35th Street: Criminal citation – 8:55pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

September 7th:

4600 block of 31st Place: Stolen vehicle – 8:15am. The owner of a 2001 Chrysler told officers that he came out for his vehicle this morning and discovered it had been stolen sometime overnight. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

4100 block of 34th Street: Hit and run collision – 8:50am. The owner of a 2002 Dodge told officers that he came out to his vehicle and discovered that it had been hit and damaged by another vehicle that failed to remain at the scene. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

3000 block of Arundel Road: Emergency petition – 5:45pm. Officers responded for the report of a hit and run collision involving a pedestrian. When they arrived they learned that a man had run up to a black sedan and was struck by the vehicle as it pulled away. The man appeared disoriented and became combative with the officers. After a brief struggle he was taken into custody and transported to Prince Georges Hospital for treatment.

2900 block of Allison Street: Emergency petition – 8:45pm. Officers responded to assist fire/rescue personnel with a subject who was threatening them and acting irrationally. When the officers arrived they witnessed the man threaten to kill the EMS personnel. He was taken into custody and transported to Washington Adventist Hospital for an emergency psychiatric evaluation.

September 6th:

4000 block of Cedar Lane Alley: Sound of shots – 8:50am. At about 1am this morning officers responded for the report of the sound of shots. No evidence was found at the time of the original call. At about 8:50am a resident found several spent handgun casings in the alley. Officers recovered the casings for further investigation.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Recovered stolen auto – 9:20pm. Officers observed a 2001 Chevy Tahoe parked in a dimly lit parking lot with all four wheels/tires missing and the interior partially stripped. Further investigation revealed that it had been reported stolen from an address in DC on August 27th. The vehicle was impounded and DC police and the owner were notified.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
