Police Report: May 24-30

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

May 30th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 7:30pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

May 29th:

4500 block of 32nd Street: Sexual assault – 12:15am. Officers took a report of a possible sexual assault involving a juvenile. The case has been referred to PGPD sexual assault investigators.

4500 block of Eastern Avenue: Theft from auto – 8:15am. The victim told officers that she left her purse on the front passenger seat while pumping gas.  A 2-door silver vehicle pulled up nest to the victim’s vehicle and a block male got out, reached through the victim’s front passenger window and stole her purse. The victim never observed the incident take place however it was caught on surveillance camera. 

4700 block of 27th Street: Theft from auto – 10am. The victim told officers that he left his cell phone in his truck while on a brief personal errand. When he returned to the truck he discovered that his phone had been stolen.

May 28th:

3700 block of 36th Street: Hit and run collision – 11am. The owner of a 2000 Toyota Corolla reported that sometime overnight his vehicle was struck by an unidentified vehicle that fled the scene without reporting the collision.

3200 block of Taylor Street: Stolen vehicle – 2:20pm. The owner of a 1999 Suzuki told officers that he loaned his vehicle to a friend. The friend parked the vehicle in the 3200 block of Taylor Street on May 26th at about 4pm. When he returned to the vehicle a couple hours later he discovered that it had been stolen.

2900 block of Queens Chapel Road: Recovered stolen auto – 2:15pm. DC police called to advise that their officers recovered a 2000 Dodge Stratus that was originally reported stolen from the 2900 block of Queens Chapel Road on May 20th. The vehicle was not drivable, both tags were still attached, and no arrests were made. The owner was notified of the recovery.

May 27th:

4200 block of 30th Street: Citizen robbery – 5:05pm. The victim told officers that while working on his vehicle in his front yard he was approached by two black males. Both suspects produced handguns and one of the suspects put a handgun to the victim’s head and demanded money. The second suspect went through the victim’s pockets and clothing and stole several items of his personal property. The suspects then fled on foot to the corner of 30th and Upshur Streets towards DC. A witness told the officers that he saw the suspects get into a gray or silver minivan and head west towards DC. PGPD robbery detectives responded to begin a follow-up investigation.

May 26th:

Nothing significant to report.

May 25th:

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: M/V collision – 1:30am. Officers investigated a single vehicle collision involving a 2013 Ford Mustang. The vehicle had crashed through a guardrail and came to rest at the bottom of an embankment. The driver was located on the sidewalk and was transported to a local hospital by fire/rescue personnel for treatment of non- life threatening injuries. Speed was a factor and the vehicle was impounded.

25th Street and Arundel Road: Hit and run collision – 11:50am. Officers responded for the report of a hit and run collision. The owner of a 2005 Ford Explorer showed them where an unidentified vehicle struck his vehicle and failed to stop and report the collision. While on scene the officers were told by witnesses that they heard the collision at about 10:20pm on the 24th.  The witnesses also said that the striking vehicle hit a 2006 Honda further down the block. Officers also documented that collision.

3300 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 8:30pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

May 24th:

4300 block of 28th Place: Vehicle impound – 12:25am. Officers impounded a 2003 Pontiac for parking in a reserved handicapped space.

4300 block of Kaywood Drive: Carjacking – 3:35am. The victim told officers that she went to retrieve her glasses from her vehicle and was approached by a dark skin black male with shoulder length dreads. The man demanded that she get out of her vehicle and when she did he got in drove off on Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island. The victim called her boyfriend and the two went looking for her truck. They later saw the vehicle being driven up Eastern Avenue where it crashed into a pole in the grass field adjacent to Otis Street and Rhode Island Avenue, NE. The driver fled the scene and was not identified. PGPD robbery detectives responded to the scene to assume a follow-up investigation. They had the vehicle towed to District I for evidence processing.

3400 block of Newton Street: Vehicle impound – 7:35pm. Officers impounded a 2010 Toyota for parking in Alley 1 and blocking the entire alley.

3000 block of Bunker Hill Road: Burglary – 11:15pm. The home owner told officers that she received a call from her son that someone had broken into their home and stole a few items. Officers checked the hole and discovered the first floor rear kitchen door ajar; and it appeared as if entry was made via a ground floor window in a room adjacent to the kitchen. The son told officers that while hiding upstairs he saw a black male wearing a white T-shirt and cargo shorts come upstairs, look around and go back downstairs. He said that he immediately called his mother when he heard the man leave the house. The owner identified a video game console, a flat screen TV and a camera as having been stolen. PGPD burglary detectives responded to the scene to assume a follow-up investigation.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Family Dollar): Theft – 8:55pm. The store manager told officer that two black males came into the store and appeared to be shopping. One of the men place four packages of underwear under his shirt and both men walked out of the store without paying for the items.

2700 block of Queens Chapel Road: Civil citation – 11:50pm. As the result of a traffic stop officers learned that a man was in possession of marijuana in a quantity of less than ten grams. He was issued several traffic citations and a civil citation for possession of the marijuana.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
