Police Report: September 7-13

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

September 13th:

3700 block of 34th Street: Traffic – 12:35am. Officers stopped a 1995 Volvo after an ALPR identified the vehicle as having a suspended registration with a pickup order for the tags. Further investigation revealed that the driver had a suspended license. He was issued several traffic citations, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

3200 block of Arundel Road: Theft from auto – 7:30am. The owner of a 1998 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 3am this morning and the time he called police someone stole a GPS and a stereo from inside his vehicle. Evidence showed that those responsible broke a rear vent window to gain entry into the vehicle.

3100 block of Arundel Road: Theft from auto – 8:45am. The owner of a 2003 Nissan Altima told officers that sometime between 10pm on the 12th and the time he called police someone broke into his vehicle through the driver’s side window and stole a laptop computer from inside.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Stolen vehicle – 3:25pm. The owner of a 2001 Dodge van told officers that sometime between 2:30am this morning and the time she called police someone stole her vehicle. No evidence was recovered and no witnesses were identified. The vehicle was recovered by officers from the New Carrollton Police Department on September 14th.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Attempt robbery – 8:35pm. The victim told officers that he was approached by a black male (NFD) who pointed a handgun at him and demanded he surrender his wallet and cell phone. As he was reaching for his wallet a truck drove by and the victim screamed for help. The suspect immediately fled the scene towards Queens Chapel Road. The victim ran home and called police an hour later after he recovered from the shock of the incident. A search of the area for the suspect was negative. PGPD robbery detectives responded to assist the victim and assume the follow up investigation.

3400 block of Bunker Hill Road: Criminal citation – 10:45pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage.

September 12th:

3200 block of Otis Street: Stolen vehicle – 6:50am. The owner of a 1997 Honda Accord told officers that sometime between 5:30pm on the 11th and the time he called police someone stole his vehicle. The owner was not sure if he had locked the doors to the vehicle and no other evidence was recovered. A few hours after the vehicle was reported stolen it was recovered by officers of the Greenbelt Police Department.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road (Beauty Depot): Theft – Store employees told officers that a black male in his 20s came into the store and stole a container of hair cream and a package of rubber bands. The suspect fled the store on foot towards Buchanan Street. A canvas of the area was conducted with negative results.

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Armed robbery – 5:55pm. The victim came out of Chuck’s Liquors where he had just cashed his pay check. He was approached by a black male in his 20s who pointed a black long gun at him and demanded he surrender his money. When the victim said that he didn’t have any money a second black male in his 20s came up to the victim and hit him in the face. The two were able to relieve the victim of his money and flee the area in a car that the victim could not describe. PGPD robbery detectives responded to interview the victim and assume a follow up investigation. During their investigation the detectives developed two suspects that the victim was able to positively identify as the two who robbed him. DC police detectives investigating suspect #1 in a separate case located the gun during a search of that suspect’s residence. Suspect #1 was charged with armed robbery and was already in custody in Upper Marlboro on the DC case. Suspect #2 was also charged with armed robbery and has not yet been located.

September 11th:

4100 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 12:05am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking in public.

3200 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 3am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place.

3100 block of Buchanan Street: Vehicle impound – 9:30am. Officers impounded a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder that had been previously marked for 48-hour towing. The vehicle had front end damage and both front tires were flat.

3800 block of 34th Street: Criminal citation – 12:05pm. Officers issued each of two men a criminal citation for drinking in public.

September 10th:

3400 block of Bunker Hill Road: Vehicle impound – 3am. Officers stopped to investigate an unattended vehicle left running in front of the Alife Market. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s tags were expired and the driver’s license was suspended. The driver was issued several traffic citations and released. The vehicle was impounded.

3100 block of Chillum Road: Assault – 7:30pm. Officers responded for the report of an assault in progress. When the officers arrived they interviewed the two women involved in the altercation and learned that the fight was over a lost cell phone. Both women had been drinking heavily and were advised of their options with a District Court Commissioner. A lethality assessment was also completed.

3200 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Criminal citation – 10:05pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for disorderly conduct.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Criminal citation – 10:15pm. Officers issued a woman a criminal citation for trespassing.

3100 block of Chillum RoadCriminal citation – 7:20pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for possession of marijuana.

3700 block of 36th Street: Warrant service – 6:25pm. Officers responded for the report of three suspicious individuals sitting outside of a vacant house. When the officers arrived they interviewed the three and learned that one of them had five open arrest warrants through the PG Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested on the warrants and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

September 9th:

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Commercial robbery – 12:35am. Two masked suspects entered the 7-Eleven brandishing handguns. The suspects grabbed two store clerks by the back of their shirts and demanded they open the registers. Fearing for their safety, the victims complied with the suspects demands. One of the suspects then directed the other to check the pockets of the victims. The suspect then stole items belonging to the victims from their pockets. The suspects fled the scene on foot down 22nd Avenue. A Hyattsville City K-9 unit responded and conducted a track which ended in the area of 22nd Avenue and Queens Chapel Road. PGPD robbery detectives responded to initiate a follow-up investigations and a forensics team responded to process the scene for evidence.

3700 block of Perry Street: Traffic – 7:40pm. Officers patrolling with an ALPR were alerted to a 2001 Infinity with suspended tags. Officers stopped the vehicle and verified the ALPR information. The driver was issued two traffic citations, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

38th and Perry Streets: Traffic – 9:35pm. Officers patrolling with an ALPR were alerted to a 2008 Ford Fusion with suspended tags. Officers stopped the vehicle and verified the ALPR information. The driver was issued three traffic citations, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

4500 block of eastern Avenue: Vehicle impound – 10:45pm. Officers stopped to investigate an individual who was screaming at the attendant at the BP Station. Further investigation revealed that the individual individual’s vehicle was displaying tags issued to another vehicle. The man was issued several traffic citations, the tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

4100 block of Rainier Avenue: Property damage – 9pm. The homeowners told officers that they left home at about 9pm on the 8th and returned at about 2pm today and discovered pry marks on the door frame as well as the door. The damage done to the door was minor and not enough to gain entry into the home. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

3100 block of Varnum Street: 2nd degree assault – 10:50pm. The victim told officers that he was in the back seat of a vehicle when the suspect got into the car and slapped him. The victim left and went to a friend’s house. The suspect followed and struck the victim in the face with a flip-flop shoe. The victim was not seriously injured and was advised of his options with a District Court Commissioner.

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road: Warrant service – 11:35pm. Officers stopped a 2006 VW for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver had an open arrest warrant for theft through the PG Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested on the warrant, issued three traffic citations and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

September 8th:

2700 block of Upshur Street: 2nd degree assault – 6:35am. The victim told officers that she was approached by a man who asked her if she had a cigarette. When she said no he pushed her and fled towards Eastern Avenue. The victim did not require medical treatment and a search for the suspect was unsuccessful.

3000 block of Arundel Road: Vehicle impound – 7:40am. Officers impounded a VIP/50 scooter for failing to display a registration sticker. The VIN did not reveal any registered owner information.

4100 block of 28th Street: Vehicle impound – 9:25am. Officers impounded a 2013 Honda Accord. The vehicle’s DC registration expired back in July of 2010.

4000 block of 35th Street: Stolen vehicle – 8:30am. The owner of a 2009 Kymoc scooter told officers that sometime between 8pm on the 7th and the time he called police someone stole his scooter from its parking spot in his driveway. No evidence/witnesses were identified.

4700 block of 31st Place: 1st degree assault – 10:30am. A 17 year old victim and his step father got into an altercation because the teen overslept for school. The altercation escalated and the father cut the victim with a razor on the left side of his neck. He was transported to Children’s Hospital for treatment of his non- life threatening injury. A warrant charging the father with 1st degree assault was submitted to the District Court Commissioner.

September 7th:

3600 block of Rhode Island Avenue: DUI – 5:15am. Officers observed a Lincoln Town Car stopped on the side of the road with the door open. Further investigation revealed that the driver was heavily intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

2400 block of Arundel Road: 1st degree assault – 7:35am. Officers responded for the report of a domestic dispute. Upon arrival they learned that a boyfriend and girlfriend were involved in a verbal argument. The argument became physical and the man threw the female down on a bed and choked her by the throat until she lost consciousness. She regained consciousness and was able to fight him off and call for help. The man fled the residence prior to the officers’ arrival. Officers applied for an arrest warrant charging the man with 1st degree assault and attempted murder.

2700 block of Webster Street: Vehicle impound – 3:35pm. Officers impounded a 1997 Chevy Suburban that was displaying tags that expired in July of this year. The vehicle had previously been issued several parking citations and was marked for 48-hour towing on August 31st.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Traffic – 8:35pm. Officers stopped a 1993 Chevy Caprice for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle’s registration was suspended with a pick up order for the tags. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

2500 block of Queens Chapel Road: CDS possession – 9:35pm. Officers stopped a 2007 Cadillac Escalade for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the driver was in possession of approximately 4lbs. of marijuana with a street value of over $37,000. The driver was charged with possession with intent to distribute a CDS and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The vehicle was impounded.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
