Police Report: June 8-14

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

June 14th:

2300 block of Varnum Street (7-11): Theft – 5:25am. A store clerk told officers that he left his cell phone in the restroom. Sometime between midnight and 3am several people used the restroom. When the clerk went to retrieve his phone he discovered that it had been stolen.

3000 block of Queens Chapel Road (Rainier Manor) : Death – 5:15am. The caretaker of a 92 year old female told officers that she found the woman unresponsive. Fire/rescue personnel responded and pronounced the woman deceased. The State Medical Examiner determined that the woman’s death was from natural causes and authorized her remains released to her guardian.

4100 block of 31st Street: Theft – 10:30am. The owner of a green Sirrus Specialized Sport bicycle told officers that he placed the bike in his driveway while he cut his grass. When he finished he went to retrieve the bike and discovered that it had been stolen.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: 2nd degree assault – 12:05pm. Officers responded to Advanced Auto parts for the report of a woman hiding in the store. When the officers arrived the woman told them that she was hiding from the father of her children after he assaulted her. Officers searched the area for the suspect and were able to locate and arrest him. He was charged with 2nd degree domestic assault and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Theft from auto – 5:55pm. The owner of a 2013 Toyota Rav4 told officers that sometime between 9pm on June 11th and the time she called police someone stole a rear taillight assembly off her vehicle.

June 13th:

3300 block of Bunker Hill Road: Theft from auto – 10am. The owner of a 2001 Chevy Ventura told officers that she parked he vehicle and was gone for about twenty minutes. When she returned she discovered that someone had shattered out the vehicle’s front passenger window and stole her purse from inside. No witnesses or evidence were identified.

June 12th:

2500 block of Arundel Road: Stolen vehicle – 6:20am. The owner of a 2001 Dodge Caravan told officers that sometime between 7pm on the 11th and the time he called police someone stole his van. No evidence was recovered at the scene. At about 6:40am officers were notified by DC police that they had recovered and impounded the victim’s van. The victim was advised of the recovery.

4600 block of 27th Street: Theft from auto – 8:50am. The owner of a 2003 Mercedes told officers that sometime prior to his call to police someone broke into his vehicle by smashing the driver’s side window. Once inside the thieves stole two laptop computers. No evidence as to those responsible was identified.

3100 block of Queens Chapel Road: Attempt stolen auto – 5:35pm. The owner of a 2001 Dodge Caravan told officers that sometime prior to his call to police someone tried to steal his vehicle. There was damage to the driver’s door lock and ignition consistent with an attempted theft. No evidence as to those responsible was identified.

June 11th:

3600 block of Oak Lane: Recovered stolen vehicle – 8:15pm. The resident told officers that she discovered an abandoned Dash 50cc motor scooter in her back yard. Further investigation revealed that the scooter had been previously reported stolen from an address in Prince George’s County. The scooter was impounded for safekeeping.

June 10th:

2400 block of Chillum Road: Traffic – 1am. Officers stopped a 2002 Nissan Maxima for a traffic violation. Further investigation revealed that the tags on the vehicle belonged to a different 2002 Nissan and were suspended. The driver was issued multiple traffic citations. The tags were seized for return to MVA and the vehicle was impounded.

2700 block of Upshur Street: Burglary – 3:30pm. A neighbor called to report that an adjacent apartment door was open and it appeared to have been kicked in. Officers checked the apartment and found no one inside. The bedroom had been ransacked and the resident said that several items of his personal property had been stolen. Other than the reporting person no witnesses were identified and no evidence recovered.

4100 block of 31st Street: Warrant service – 6:10pm. Officers investigating a possible missing juvenile ran a warrant check on the juvenile’s mother. The check revealed that she had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on charges of driving without a license. She was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The juvenile was located and returned to the custody of a parent.

June 9th:

3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue: Dog bite – 11:20am. The victim told officers that as she was walking along Rhode Island Avenue a small black and brown dog aggressively approached her and bit her on her right thigh. Officers were able to locate the dog and its owner and also notified PG Animal Control for follow-up.

3800 block of 34th Street: Theft – 1:50pm. The victim told officers that while she was walking along 34th Street when a black male with no shirt and blue jeans walking past her. As the man passed he stole her cell phone from inside her back pocket. The victim was unaware of the theft until a witness told her. The suspect fled the area in an unknown direction and officers could not locate him during a subsequent canvass of the area.

June 8th:

One Municipal Place: Criminal citation – 8am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for trespassing. The man had previously been issued repeated loitering warning notices.

4100 block of 31st Street: Found property – 2:30pm. Officers responded to take custody of several items of personal property found by a resident. The property was returned to the owner who told officers that it had been inside his car when it was stolen in Brentwood.

3500 block of Wells Avenue: Possession of synthetic marijuana - 3:20pm. Officers stopped to check the welfare of two individuals sleeping in a vehicle. Further investigation revealed that one of the occupants was in possession of synthetic marijuana. He was arrested, charged accordingly and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville. The second occupant was found in possession of drug paraphernalia. She was issued a criminal citation and sent on her way.

3600 block of Perry Street: Attempted burglary – 4:20pm. The resident told officers that he returned home to discover that someone tried unsuccessfully to break into his home through the front door. There was minor damage to the door. The scene was processed for evidence and there were no witnesses identified.

The following information  comes courtesy  of the  New Jersey Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Cell Public cell phone charging stations supplied with power cables or USB ports located in stores, airports, libraries, and schools may seem like a convenient way to charge your mobile devices on-the-go, but can you be sure that your device and data will be safe if you connect? These kiosks can contain concealed computers that attempt to extract data such as contact information, photos, and videos from connected devices, unbeknownst to the users. Additionally, malicious or compromised charging stations can expose devices to the risk of a malware infection. Even if the charging station isn’t malicious, the manufacturer or owner of the kiosk may require users to input their email addresses or phone numbers in order to charge their devices, potentially exposing them to unwanted marketing campaigns, spam emails, and scam calls. Police Report: May 8-11

Friday May 8th : 3400 block of 11 Newton Street : At about 2 pm officers responded for the report of a woman who had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The boyfriend allegedly punched the woman in the mouth and choked her. She told the officers that she did not want any police assistance and refused to tell the officers what had occurred. She was referred to the District Court Commissioner if she decided to press charges at a later time. Saturday May 9th : Nothing significant to report. Sunday May 10th : 4500 block of Eastern Avenue (BP station) : At about 11 am officers responded for the report of a stolen auto. The officers met with the victim/owner who told them that he left the keys to his 2002 Lincoln on the front seat when he went inside to pay for gas. When he came out of the store he saw his Lincoln being driven up Eastern Avenue towards Rhode Island Avenue by a black male (no further description). A check of the area for the stolen car proved negative and a lookout for it was gi
